About Trincomalee

Trincomalee stands as Sri Lanka's most strategically important eastern port city, built around what British Admiral Horatio Nelson proclaimed as 'the finest harbour in the world.' This circular natural deep-water harbor has attracted seafaring civilizations for over 2,000 years, serving as a critical naval base from ancient Tamil kingdoms through British colonial rule to modern times. The city's crown jewel is the ancient Koneswaram Temple, one of the five sacred Pancha Ishwarams, dramatically perched on 400-foot Swami Rock cliff and known as 'Dakshina Kailasam' (Southern Kailash) for its longitude alignment with Mount Kailash in Tibet. Originally destroyed by Portuguese forces in 1622, the temple was reconstructed in 1963 using authentic 10th-century Chola bronze statues discovered underwater by Arthur C. Clarke. Trincomalee's pristine eastern coastline features world-class beaches like Nilaveli with its 7-kilometer stretch of white sand and shallow turquoise waters extending 100+ meters from shore. The area encompasses Pigeon Island National Park, Sri Lanka's premier marine sanctuary protecting 100+ coral species, 300+ reef fish species, and critical sea turtle nesting habitats. The region's unique eastern monsoon patterns create optimal conditions April-September, making it Sri Lanka's premier destination when the west and south coasts experience rough seas.
