About Tangalle

Tangalle (Sinhala: තංගල්ල, Tamil: தங்காலை), derived from 'projected rock' referring to rocky coastline formations, is a significant coastal town in Hambantota District, Southern Province, located 195 kilometers south of Colombo and 35 kilometers east of Matara. With a population of 72,500 and governed by Tangalle Municipal Council, this regionally important fishing port sits on one of Sri Lanka's largest natural bays protected by enclosing coral reefs. The town maintains authentic character with 97.7% Buddhist population, traditional fishing communities, and minimal development compared to other southern coastal destinations. Tangalle serves as a crucial sea turtle conservation hub, hosting nesting sites for five endangered species, and offers pristine crescent-shaped beaches with golden sand backed by coconut palms. The area features significant colonial heritage including a 16th-century Dutch fort (now used as a prison), Dutch Rest House, and Court House. The region's cultural significance extends to nearby Mulkirigala Rock Temple, where British administrator George Turnour discovered palm-leaf manuscripts in 1826 containing the key to translating the Mahawamsa chronicle, enabling scholars to study Sri Lankan history from 543 BCE. The town also serves as gateway to Dondra Head, Sri Lanka's southernmost point with its iconic 49-meter lighthouse.
